Dr. Umakant T. Purohit passed away on April 22, 2012 at home with his family by his side. He was born in Nairobi, Kenya on August 10, 1936 to Tribhuvandas and Kamla Purohit. He was the youngest of 5 siblings. He graduated from B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad, India and he received his F.R.C.S from the Royal College of Surgeons in London, England. He was an orthopedic surgeon and practiced at Elyria Memorial Hospital for over 30 years with an unwavering commitment to his patients. Dr. Purohit moved from London to the United States in 1975 and settled his family – his wife, Bharti and his three daughters – Lopa, Deepa and Teena – in Elyria, Ohio. He was the first to go to college in his own family and believed that a great education and traveling the world would lead to success in life and humility was the pathway. He had a keen interest in politics and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a caring doctor, father and husband deeply devoted to his family, friends and community, always offering a helping hand to those in need.
