Johnny A. Brawner, MD, 69, of Avon passed away on October 5, 2012 at the Cleveland Clinic, surrounded by family, following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Solano, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines on August 10, 1943. He completed his schooling in the Philippines, including his Doctor of Medicine from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine, before relocating to Ohio in 1969. He began his residency at the Cleveland Clinic in 1970, and was later promoted to Chief Resident in 1973. During this time, he met Carol Scott who was a Registered Nurse at the Clinic. They married on November 26, 1976 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Following residency and fellowships at the Clinic, Johnny started a solo medical practice in General Surgery at St. John West Shore ("SJWS;" now St. John Medical Center). During his time at SJWS, he held numerous positions including Chairman of the Department of Surgery, member of the Community Board and the Board of Trustees, President of the Medical Staff, and a tenor in the SJWS Choir. In addition to practicing medicine, he belonged to numerous professional associations including the American Medical Association, the University of the Philippines Medical Alumni Association in America, and the American College of Physician Executives. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Philippine Physicians in Ohio and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
As an innovative man around the house, he took his creativity to the professional level when he was able to patent a Back to Back tape in 1989, used by many medical professionals and hospitals.
Dr. Brawner believed one should always continue learning. He led by example by earning a Masters of Business Administration from Baldwin-Wallace College in 2000, and a Masters of Public Health from Cleveland State University in 2006. While at CSU, he was inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society. He also attended the Physician Executive Institute at Case Western Reserve University from 1997 - 2004.
Active in the community, he volunteered with Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine Health System for 17 years. As a member of the Avon United Methodist Church, he enjoyed singing in the choir.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 36 years, Carol, four children: Jennifer, Johnny Jr. (Suvita), Alison and Carolyn, and eight siblings (Felix Jr., Lenore, Marjorie, Felisa, Jane, Libbie, Percy, and Josie). He was preceded in death by his parents, Felix and Juana, and siblings (Zinnia, Romeo, and Franklin).
In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 10501 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44106. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 10, at 11am at Avon United Methodist Church, 37711 Detroit Road, Avon, OH 44011 with Rev. Elizabeth Krall officiating.
