1. "Frank, my dearest friend, I will miss you.
   Circumstances and distance has kept us apart for most of the past fifty years. However, emails and phone calls have helped to keep us close. I will miss the jokes and our conversations of sports, politics and life.

2. Frank Soldat was a kind and gentle person. He was a good man in the best sense of the word through his actions. If you were lonely or sad, he’d go out of his way to spend an afternoon or evening with you, listen to you on the phone, cheer you up with a witty letter, let you cry on his shoulder, give you money, drive you to the doctor, work with you to solve a problem, bolster up your morale with kind words about yourself, make you laugh with a light – hearted joke ( I never understood most of his jokes…. It was his good nature about life and human foibles that made me smile) or just TO BE THERE sharing his strength of character and warm heartedness ON YOUR SIDE OF THE FENCE__ by your side, at your back, or out in front to guide / or befriend you until you stood safer, taller or happier all by yourself. With Frank it wasn’t a onetime deal, it was a constant flow of his friendship, good heart and generous nature. He did it so sweetly and humbly that you didn’t feel like a lame duck but like a good-person, I’m okay now …. Maybe things aren’t so bad and they’ll get better for me again sooner more than later.

   But if you weren’t feeling sad or lonely or in a fix, Frank was even better! A good talker, funny, witty, ready to play or sing or dance or just have a wonderful time together.

   In a letter he joked that he had a great fondness for the alphabet letter “H”.

   Helping Hand

   Happy

   Heart-warming

   Our mothers were sisters and “HUMMERS.”

   Frank Soldat was a kind and gentle person. He was a good man, my first cousin, and one of the dearest friends in my life. I will miss him greatly.

3. IN MEMORIUM

   
   “Love, you are love…better far than a metaphor could ever, ever be…” is a song lyric from the musical “The Fantastics” and these words also sum up the essence of my cousin, Frank. He was in life, a loving person who had great love for God, family and friends. He showed that love by kind gifts at special times, generosity to those who needed help and by a cheerful disposition. He enjoyed telling a good joke and we shared plenty of them in our countless phone conversations over the years. He also enjoyed going to horse races from time to time.
   One warm memory I still recall with a smile was my trip to the track with “Frankie, Baby” (my nick name for him). I had never been to a horse race so one night, while I was visiting with him and my Aunt Estelle, he decided we should check out harness racing and of course he encouraged me to pick a horse and bet. My method was to go by the horse’s name…if the name spoke to me I would bet on that horse (which I did in every race.) For example if the horse’s name was “Fun Filly” I’d pick that horse because it conjured up a jolly filly who must have earned her name because she was a pleasant little beast. Much to our mutual surprise, that method actually worked and in no time he was betting on my choices.
   Being frugal at the time, of necessity, I made small bets. But I wanted to win. To be sure I had more than one chance at victory, I always bet “to show” which was win or place 2nd or show 3rd. While I didn’t get rich that night, I did win almost every time and had a blast.
   Over the weeks I spent visiting with Frank and his mom in Cleveland, he and I went to movies and had long philosophical conversations…one I still remember dealt with making a difficult decision. At the time I wanted to go from Cleveland to California, but was afraid to be on my own so far from my parents and family in New Jersey. Even though I had just lived and worked for two years in Germany, I felt sad at the thought of being a continent away from Mom and Dad yet again. What to do, what to do? His advice was:
   “When in doubt, think about it and then choose. A wrong decision is better than never making any difficult decisions in life.”
   And thanks to that conversation I actually bought a Grey Hound Bus ticket and traveled from Cleveland to Los Angeles where I have remained to this day. Here in the Golden State I eventually met my husband, Richard (on jury duty no less) and found a fun job writing about theatre and film which I still do today. So in a certain way “Frankie Baby” influenced my life more than he ever realized.
   While we never visited again in person, we talked often on the phone about all sorts of things. Often, even when his illness was starting to take hold, we would sing together. He loved the old songs with their loving lyrics that described warm feelings of happiness and romance. We sang lots of songs over the years, but he often sang one in particular. I don’t remember the name of the song, but I do remember his favorite line….“There’s a tree in the meadow, with a stream drifting by, and where ere you go you’ll always know I will love you till I die….”
   Aunt Estelle never liked to say “Good-bye.” Instead she would say “Aloha” which means “farewell” or “Till we meet again” in the Hawaiian language. So, dear “Frankie Baby,” I love you. Aloha--until we meet again.
