Obituary for Dr. William Miller

April 20, 1926 - April 25, 2020
Bay Village, Ohio | Age 94

Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Friend

Dr. William Thomas Miller (Tom), 94 of Bay Village passed away Saturday, April 25, 2020. He was born April 20, 1926 in Beaver Falls Penn to William and Annette Miller. The family moved to Euclid, Ohio where Tom graduated from Euclid High. During these years he made lifelong friends. He married Mary Withington and they celebrated 70 years of marriage last August. Throughout his life, most who met him felt immediately wrapped in the warm embrace of his enduring love and loyalty.

In World War II Tom served as a Telegraph Operator in the remote outpost of Greenland. After honorable discharge and return to the States he attended Ohio State University. He graduated with a Doctorate of Dental Science. He settled in his Dental practice in Bay Village, Ohio. Tom was known among his patients as the humming dentist; his love for dentistry and his patients was evident. He joyfully embraced each sunrise and never 'worked' a day in his life.

Tom donated countless hours of volunteer dentistry both at home and abroad. He served as a missionary dentist for over 30 years in St. Lucia, Africa, Nicaragua, and eventually returned annually to his beloved Guatamala. Tom was committed to helping any person in need and enjoyed giving those with dental issues the confidence to smile freely. Tom was very modest and unassuming. He declined nominations for 'health care hero 'and any other form of publicity that featured him as central to the doing-for-others story. He was quietly active in additional charities over the years including the American Field Service.

Tom was a longtime congregant in the Anglican Church (previously St. Barnabas) serving on the vestry, various committees, and singing in the choir. He was quick to offer support to anyone who needed it and his mailbox often overflowed with words of appreciation.

Tom was an accomplished athlete and devoted husband and father. He loved a good game of golf, hand of gin rummy, and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his beloved wife Mary of 70 years; three loving children; cherished grandchildren; great grandchildren and adoring nieces and nephews.
