Obituary

William S Gach, age 81, passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at the Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital after a long struggle with heart and pulmonary diseases. He was born in McMechen, West Virginia on July 22, 1936. His family relocated to Elyria, Ohio in 1947 where he spent his youth. He graduated from St. Mary's grade school in 1950 and graduated from Elyria High School with the class of 1954. He attended Griswold Institute for Eng. Drawing in Cleveland, Fenn College Eng. School, and was a graduate of Dyke College with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management sponsored by the Ford Motor Co. external degree program. He also attended Lorain Community College and the University of Maryland while in the U.S Army, studying Business and Law. He also attended many technical schools for automation and robotics while employed at Ford. Mr. Gach was employed at the Harshaw Chemical Co. of Elyria from 1954 to 1969, working as an industrial electrician and supervisory capacity. The next 27 years he was employed at the Ford Motor Co. Lorain Assembly Plant in the Plant Eng. Department, attaining the level of Superintendent. After his retirement in 1996, he and his wife, Edith, were involved in the formation of a financial planning and taxation Corporation where he held the position of Vice President. He entered into full retirement in 2000. Mr. Gach served in two branches of the military, the US Marine Corps Reserve 73rd Special Infantry, 3rd battalion from 1954 to 1959, and from 1959 to 1962 in the headquarters battery of U.S. Army 82nd Arty. 3rdGun Battalion in Giessen, Germany. He was extended there for six months due to the Cuban Missile and the Berlin Wall crises. Mr. Gach was a past member of the Rocky River power squadron boating organization where he instructed safe boating classes and was on the membership involvement committee. He was active in the Republican Party and was elected to a four year term in 2000 as a member of the Lorain County central committee. He was also a past member of the Avon Lake Republican Party club. He is a member of the National Rifle Association, the Safari Club International and the Sportsmen Reel and Gun club of Amherst. Mr. Gach was an avid outdoorsmen and enjoyed trap and skeet shooting, hunting, fishing and golfing. His latest enjoyment was antique and late model sport cars. He also enjoyed cooking, making some of the recipes he discovered during his many trips to Europe. He traveled extensively in Switzerland, all of western and eastern Europe, Hawaii, Bahamas islands and cruises, and visited all of the western and southern states. He and his second wife, Judy, traveled a 14- day trip on the Danube River from Bucharest, Romania to Budapest, Hungary, stopping over in Vienna, Austria. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 16 years, Edith Gach, in 2007; his parents, Mary and Stephan Gach; a sister, Rosemary Jaquay; brothers-in-law, Earl Jaquay and Benjamin Lorensky; and a grandson, Matthew Huffman. Mr. Gach leaves his wife, Judy Lynn (Marquardt) Gach of Avon Lake; a sister, Dolores Lorensky of Elyria; two daughters, Mrs. Susan Macri of North Olmstead, and Mary Ann Huffman of Elyria; five grandsons and two great-granddaughters; five nieces in the U.S.; and a brother-in-law, nephews and nieces in Adlisville and Zurich, Switzerland. He is a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Avon Lake. By Bill's request there will be no visitation. A memorial Mass Celebration of Life will be held at Holy Spirit Church, 410 Lear Rd. in Avon Lake on Friday, March 23 at 10:00 am, officiated by Father Charles Strebler. Immediately following mass will be the interment at Sunset Memorial Park in North Olmsted. Bill also wishes that all attend a luncheon and life celebration held at the Legacy restaurant at Sweetbrier Golf course on Jaycox Road, Avon Lake, following the interment. All arrangements are being made by the Busch Funeral and Crematory Services, 163 Avon Belden Rd. in Avon Lake. Bill requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Holy Spirit Catholic Church building and repair fund (see address above).
