Loving Father

Obituary

Thomas G Ellis passed away peacfully at St John Westshore Hospital the morning of Wednesday, July 11, at the age of 100. He was born in Franklin, Pennsylvania in 1917, the youngest of 9 children of Edward and Mazie Ellis. He traveled to Pennsylvania earlier this year to attend the funeral of his last surviving sibling, his sister Jane Judson, who passed away at the age of 102. He was an avid golfer and a sports enthusiast (Go Steelers!). He enjoyed traveling, visiting many places including England, Canada, and, as a history buff, many Presidential homes and historical sites throughout the the United States. Tom loved to entertain those around him with a wealth of jokes, puns and songs.

He was married to Gertrude McClellan, also of Franklin, in 1948. They celebrated their golden anniversary in 1998 just prior to her passing. He is survived by his three children, Kathryn Ellis of Cleveland Heights, Christine Donahue (Richard) of Bay Village, and Charles Ellis (Mary Ann) of Lakewood, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He joined the Army Air Corps prior to Pearl Harbor Day and served the duration of the war in the European Theater, stationed in Great Britian, with the Eighth Air Force Fighter Station. After discharge he worked as a surveyor building the Pennsylvania Turnpike, later moving his family to Ohio to continue construction on the Ohio Turnpike. Following his work with the Turnpike Commission, he worked as a machinist in the automotive industry, retiring from ABEX (American Brake Shoe) in 1980. He lived in Ohio the remainder of his life, spending more than 50 years as a resident of Brooklyn. For the past five years, he has thrived at Rockport Senior Living in Rocky River. The family wishes to extend their love and thanks to the staff and residents of Rockport for helping to make his final years very happy ones.
