North Ridgeville, Ohio | Age 90

Loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother

Ruth Ann Koler (Gunder Leko)
Ruth was born on January 20, 1930 in Elyria, Ohio to Roger and Anna (Wissinger) Gunder. She and her siblings Lois, Roger Jr. and Carl grew up on the westside of Elyria. Ruth graduated from Elyria High School in 1947. She worked at Isleys, a local ice cream parlor, and admitted to being generous in her servings. After graduation, she attended and graduated from Beauty School and was a licensed beautician. Ruth enjoyed ice cream, having her hair done, and nails manicured up until the time of her death.
On May 6, 1950, she married Steve Leko Jr. They worked together to develop Leko Upholstery and had four daughters. Ruth was a member of the Elyria Women's Club and served as President of that organization. After Steve's death in 1965, Ruth supported her daughters. Frequent stories were shared about the summer Ruth took the girls across country via Amtrak to visit family in California and Arizona and ensured the girls saw the Grand Canyon.
Ruth married George Koler in 1967 and managed the household of a blended family with 7 children. Family dinner was on the table every night and homemade desserts like her fabulous apple pie were always available. She canned Hungarian hot peppers, tomato sauce and more. Christmas was never missing a variety of cookies or nut rolls and pastries at Ruth's. She volunteered her time at St. Vincent de Paul Church both at Bingo and in baking nut rolls.
Ruth was a 51-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and served as President of the Auxiliary. She was active in the Legion until the past few years but continued to enjoy attending Past President lunches several times a year. She was a long-time volunteer at the Legion weekly fish frys. She treasured her many friendships with Legion members.
Ruth worked at Ely school in the cafeteria and as a nurse aide and bookkeeper at a nursing facility in the 1980s. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling with friends and her family. She visited Hawaii with her mother, and Alaska with a friend where she participated in a whitewater rafting trip. She also enjoyed a few cruises and spent time twice a year with her companion, John Wirth, at a fishing camp in Canada for several years. Ruth visited Chicago, South Carolina, California, and Florida. She took many trips around Ohio to spend time with her daughters and grandchildren. Ruth was a league bowler for many years and continued to bowl well into her 80s.
The love of Ruth's life are her daughters and sons in law, her grandchildren and her great granddaughter who all survive her: Marie and Tom Higgins, Mary and Ron Resar, Marilyn and Mike Weber, and Marian and Bruce Tarrant. Grandchildren: Matthew Resar, Katie Higgins, William and Sarah Tarrant, Patrick Higgins, Alexis Tarrant, and Jack Tarrant. And the most recent light of her life, her Great Granddaughter, Annie Tarrant.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister Harriet and her three siblings; her first husband Steve Leko Jr. in 1965 and her second husband George Koler in 1987.
Since November of 2018, Ruth has resided at O'Neill Healthcare North Ridgeville. She made many friends there and enjoyed Bingo, Bowling, music activities and appreciated the loving care she was provided. She enjoyed going out for her hair and manicure appointments, visits to local restaurants and participating in the Lorain County Ice Cream Tour.
This past January, Ruth celebrated her 90th birthday at her beloved American Legion with family and many friends. The ice cream was served in generous portions just like Ruth wanted. Over the past few months, she enjoyed reading and rereading the many birthday cards and well wishes she received. She loved sending and receiving Holiday cards and was known to "keep count" on how many she received. Ruth survived COVID19 by the grace of God and the care provided by O'Neill Healthcare North Ridgeville. She was so very appreciative of the numerous cards and well wishes that were sent to her during that time.
Ruth left this earth after a wonderful life of over 90 years on July 14, 2020. Her final days were spent at the Ames Family Hospice House, Westlake, with her family by her side.
Memorial contributions can be made to the American Legion Auxiliary. Ruth particularly encouraged the support of the Auxiliary's annual campaign for coats for students in the Elyria City Schools. Contributions might also be made in her memory to the Hospice of Western Reserve to support the care provided to individuals and their families at Ames Hospice House.
Services: Ruth raised her daughters to be kind, respectful and caring to others. In that light, the girls have made the decision to keep everyone safe and all services are private for the immediate family only. When it is again safe to celebrate her life, there will be a gathering at that time. Ruth's family prays for everyone's health and safety.
At Last….she is dancing in Heaven with Steve.
