Obituary for Richard Suhm

May 31, 1931 - March 15, 2021
Marysville, Ohio | Age 89

Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Friend

Richard "Dick" Suhm, 89 of Marysville, OH formerly of Avon Lake, OH peacefully passed away Monday, March 15, 2021. He was born to parents Joseph and Ruth (née Cox) Suhm on May 31, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Richard was a graduate of West Tech High School in Cleveland. He joined the Navy after graduation, serving aboard the USS Missouri during the Korean War. His shipmates called him "the tourist" because he loved to explore various countries, camera in hand, during liberties.

Richard went on to pursue his passion for art. He won a full scholarship from the Cooper School of Art, where he met the love of his life, Heidi.

Richard continued with his career in the arts as the owner of Visual Art Merchandising where he created commercial artwork for numerous Cleveland companies, including: the Cleveland Health Museum, National City Bank and Glidden Paint, not to mention the numerous class projects his children asked him to help create. He also made wedding posters and Valentine's Day cards which his children received each year.

Richard would go on to create and engineer a safety device, owning and operating Safe-T-Spin and Beacon Safety Products. His dedication, passion and commitment to growing his business and promoting the safety of others was easily evident even to those just meeting him for the first time.

Richard loved his pets, dancing to polkas, roller skating, shooting pool, boating, fishing and spending time with his best friend William "Bill" Brashwitz (deceased) and family around a bucket of Kenny King's chicken. He was a lifelong member of the Avon Lake United Methodist Church.

Richard is survived by his wife of 60 years Heidi (née Caduff); loving children Garrett Suhm, Tracey Garrett (Rich) and Tanya Alloway (Jim); grandchildren, Ryan, Alison, Evan and Charlotte; siblings Evelyn Hemme (deceased) and brother-in-law Norman (deceased); niece and nephews Jeanette, Dennis, and Jeff.

A private funeral will be held at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
