Obituary

Richard Parks Turner, 85 of Avon Lake since 1957, formerly of Stow and Dayton, passed away at home on Friday, November 17, 2017. Richard was born on December 22, 1931 in Youngstown, OH, graduated from Oakwood High School, Dayton, OH. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Linguistics and his Master's Degree in Education at Harvard University. After college, he served three years in the U.S. Army in Panama. Richard taught Spanish and Latin in Avon Lake for 28 years. During his teaching career he also completed a John Hay Fellowship at UC Berkeley, taught Spanish with the Peace Corps in New York, and taught at Lorain Catholic High School and Olmsted Falls City Schools. He was a member of the Avon Lake United Church of Chirst where he was Moderator and served on many boards and committees including Stephen Ministries. Richard was a member of Avon Lake Kiwanis, American Field Service, Harvard Club, Phi Beta Kappa, Stow High School Alumni Group, and Avon Lake Schools Foundation. He volunteered his time translating for the FBI, Mercy Hospital, working with Voter Ballot Reviews, and conducting field interviews of prospective Harvard students. Richard enjoyed traveling, collecting stamps and coins, crossword and Sudoku puzzles, reading history books, and classical music.
Richard is survived by his children, Gail Elizabeth Kochis (Thomas) of Cleveland, Robert Parks (Nancy) of Avon Lake, Daniel Gustav (Tammy McClanahan) of Tuscumbia, AL, Melissa Tylee Newbern (Garry) of Florence, AL, and Marjorie Tylee Engle (Jeff Harrison) of Parma; grandchildren Jacob, Joshua, Brandon, Holly, Justin, Meagan, Danielle, Rickey, Regina, Matthew, Amanda, Heather, David, Emily, Cecily, and Susanna; great-grandchildren Avia Emma, Adele, Luke, Patrick, Dakota, Kolby, Hayden, Jensen, Leland, Lincoln, Vivian, Lillian, Brenton, Christopher, Zachary, and Ethan; sister, Laura Holdsclaw and numerous nieces and nephews . He was preceded in death by his wife, Julianne (nee Hurst) Turner, parents Allen and Lois (nee Parks) Turner, son David Richmond Turner (Lisa), daughter Alicia Richmond Leetch (Jason), and great-grandson Andrew.
Memorial contributions may be made to the ALUCC church music or Stephen Ministries programs. Friends may call at the Busch Funeral Home, 163 Avon Belden Rd. Avon Lake on Tuesday, November 28 from 3-7pm. Memorial service will be held at Avon Lake United Church of Christ, 32801 Electric Blvd., Avon Lake, OH on Wednesday, November 29 at 11am with Rev.
