Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather

Obituary

Paul W. Stefanik of Strongsville passed away on June 30, 2021, at the age of 96. He was the beloved husband of the late Elizabethanne (Betty) Stefanik, loving father of Cheryl Anne Stefanik (David Sidener), Terrence Lee Stefanik (Providence), Christine Elizabeth Blanke (David) and Debra Lynn Stefanik (Jerry Brost), cherished grandfather of seven (Jason, Codi, Lucas, Gina, Kelsey, Libby and Rusty), and great grandfather of four (Xavier, Izabella, Wes and Rye).

Paul was born in Cleveland on July 11, 1924. He attended John Hay and East Technical High Schools, graduating with honors in 1942. During World War II, he entered the Army. He trained as a surgical technician before joining the Air Corps Cadet program, where he became a radio operator and waist gunner for the B-17 and B-29 bombers. While stationed in El Paso, Texas, he met Elizabethanne Vosler, who was attending the Hotel Dieu School of Nursing with plans to join the Cadet Nurse Corps, at the USO. They fell in love through their mutual enjoyment of dancing. They were married on August 1, 1945 and were together for almost 65 years, until she passed on February 10, 2009.

Paul earned his Silver Flight Wings, the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal WWII and American Theater Ribbon before being honorably discharged from the Army Air Force as a Sergeant in 1946.

After his military service, Paul attended Dyke and Spencerian Business College. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business (BBA) in 1955, graduating Summa Cum Laude and receiving the Phi Theta Pi gold scholarship key for the highest grade point average. He also attended Cleveland Marshall Law School for nearly two years and graduated from the Ohio Savings and Loan Academy. He instilled his love of learning in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, carefully reviewing their report cards and always remarking, "I love good grades!"

In 1955, Paul began working at Ridgewood Savings & Loan as the assistant manager of the Ridge Road office. He quickly rose to secretary in 1957 and then vice-president in 1959. When Ridgewood was acquired by Third Federal Savings & Loan in 1963, he became manager of the Ridge Road office, then assistant vice-president of the company in 1965 and vice-president in 1967. In 1987, he became Executive Vice-President of Branch Administration, a position in which he served until his retirement in 1993. Paul viewed his Third Federal colleagues as a second family and was incredibly proud of the work they did together, helping people save money and buy their first, as well as subsequent, homes.

After retiring, Paul was elected to the Third Federal Savings & Loan Association Board of Directors, serving on the Finance Committee. He was named a Director Emeritus upon his retirement from the Board in July 2016.

Paul was active in many civic organizations throughout his life, including the Parma Jaycees, Parma Chamber of Commerce, Friends of the Parma Library, Kiwanis Club of Parma, Family Service Association (which awarded him a lifetime membership for service to the organization) and the Ridgewood YMCA. Paul was also an avid runner for many years, frequently completing 5k and 10k runs in Cleveland.

Paul and Betty were exceptional dancers throughout their lives and were an amazing couple to watch on the dance floor. Now that they are reunited, we hope they will dance together for eternity.

Paul's family would like to thank Shurmer Place Memory Assisted Living and Cypress Hospice for the warmth and kindness they provided while he was in their care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shurmer Place Memory Assisted Living, the American Diabetes Association or the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. Visitation hours will be Sunday, July 11, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Busch Funeral Home, 7501 Ridge Road, Parma, Ohio.
