Obituary for Ora Albert Calhoun

January 12, 1941 - November 14, 2020
Bay Villageo, Ohio | Age 79

Loving Father, Grandfather, Uncle and Friend

Ora Albert Calhoun, 79, of Bay Village, Ohio passed away November 14, 2020. He was surrounded by his three children and they held his hands as he peacefully passed on to the next life.
He was born on January 12, 1941 to Charles and Winifred (nee Sweet) Calhoun in Aurora, OH. He lived in Aurora, OH and East Providence, RI where he graduated from East Providence High School. He graduated from Cleveland State University School of Business in 1963.
Ora married Mary Lou Calhoun that year and they moved to the Chicago, IL area for a few years where he worked in Office Furniture Sales before being called to a different path.
Ora graduated from Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, VA in 1972 and began his journey serving others and God. He was the Assistant Priest at St. Luke's in Lakewood, OH for a short time before being called to St. Matthew's in Ashland, OH where he was the Priest from 1973-1980. He was very much involved in growing the youth ministry there, which led to his next calling as the Youth Director for the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio and Director of the Diocesan Retreat Center in Painesville, OH, Cedar Hills. Under his leadership, the Youth movement in the Diocese grew over the years and hundreds of young people were called to discover what God meant to them and how to serve others by leading their peers.
After many years in that role, he and Mary Lou decided to follow another ministry to Atchison, KS where he was the Director of the St. Francis Academy, a national, not-for-profit behavioral health care organization serving children, adolescents, and their families. Ora and Mary Lou became deeply involved there and grew the Academy to serve hundreds of young people over the years.
Ora and Mary Lou moved back to Ohio in 2001 to be closer to family, where he continued to serve the Diocese in many ways. He lived a life serving others and helping young people connect themselves and God. His positive influence and loving guidance helped thousands of people grow into loving, kind, and giving individuals.
Ora officially retired to spend more time with his grandchildren and his cat. He loved needlepoint. His handiwork can be found hanging from the mantels of his children and grandchildren at Christmas. His custom stoles can be found worn by priests across the Diocese to this day. He absolutely loved dogs and cats and cared for many of them over the years. From the dachshund, Barney to the last cat, Cyrus, Ora and Mary Lou loved them all.
Ora is survived by son Stephan (Pam) and daughters Heather (Jon) Ransom and Michelle (Mark) Pomfrey; grandchildren Mack and Mimi Calhoun, Ava and Maeve Ransom, Joshua, Sarah, and Molly Pomfrey; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his wife of 52 years. Mary Lou; parents Charles and Winifred Calhoun; brothers Allen Calhoun and Charles Calhoun; and sister Gertrude Johnson.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cleveland Animal Protective League 1729 Wiley Ave., Cleveland, OH 44113.
