Norman Patterson, 86 of Avon Lake, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2020. He was born June 11, 1933 in the north of England to parents Joseph and Mary Ann (nee Bewick) Patterson.

Norman is survived by his beloved children Jacki (Dave) Currie of Avon Lake, OH., David (Nancy "Lance" Whitner) Patterson of Steamboat Springs, CO. and Christopher (Anna) Patterson of Bozeman, MT.; loving grandchildren Heather, Erin Holzaepfel (Greg), Alida, Lillian, Graham, Quinnell and Paige; great-grandson Ryan; dear brother Bill.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Lilian; parents Joseph and Mary Ann Patterson; siblings Joe, Irene and Carol.

As a youth growing up in England during the war, athletics were an important part of Norman's life and he excelled at long distance running, gymnastics and diving. He was a veteran of the British Army. Norman and his young family moved from England to the United States in 1966. His successful career in engineering led to worldwide travel and time spent living in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.

Norman was an avid golfer and enjoyed time skiing with his grandchildren. Attending hockey games also became a favorite pastime beginning when he accompanied his youngest son on his travel team. After retirement, a significant part of his life included trips to England to see friends and relatives, as well as cruises and vacations to Fripp Island. For his 80th birthday a trip to India with his 3 children provided unforgettable memories. His favorite journeys were out to Colorado and Montana to visit his sons and their families. In 2016 Norman moved from Michigan to Avon Lake where he was closer to family, his greatest pleasure.

Two years ago, Norman was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). He faced his disease with determination and fortitude. IPF is rare and often misdiagnosed as common symptoms are frequently attributed to other illnesses. To help raise awareness please click on the link below.
