Obituary

Miriam Jean "Mimi" Butler (nee Johnson), age 91, of Lorain, Ohio, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at the Kemper House in Strongsville, Ohio.

Mrs. Butler was born in Cambria Township, Pennsylvania on February 22, 1929 and was raised in Colver, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late James C. Johnson and Effie "Jean" (nee Baker) Johnson. Miriam was just three years old when her young brother and mother Jean died. Her father James C. Johnson later remarried Marian Johnson and Marian became stepmother to Miriam and her two older sisters Betty and Vivian.

Miriam earned a nursing degree from Edinboro University in Edinboro, Pennsylvania. She married William P. Butler and moved to Lorain, Ohio in 1952. She worked at St. Joseph Hospital and at Lorain Community Hospital as a Registered Nurse. She was an active member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Lorain.

Nicknamed "Mimi" in Nursing School, she was also an avid tennis player and bowler for many years on the courts of Oak Hills and North Ridge Tennis Clubs and the lanes of Rebman's and Broadway Lanes in Lorain.

Later in life, Mimi resided at the Berea Lake Towers/Generations Senior Living in Berea, Ohio and in 2019 moved to the Kemper House in Strongsville, Ohio.

Mrs. Butler is survived by her children; Shelley D. Butler-Paine (Mark) of Fuquay Varina, North Carolina, Carol J. Butler-Gnagey (Marv) of Port St. Joe, Florida, Jeffrey W. Butler (Mary Ellen) of Strongsville, Ohio and Todd J. Butler of Loveland, Ohio; her grandchildren Christy Winton (Corey), Melissa Schneider (Joshua), Chad Butler, Nicholas Butler, Brian Gnagey (Ashley), Isaac Butler and Aidan Butler; and five great grandchildren Easton and Amersyn Schneider, Caden and Cieran Winton, and Charlie Gnagey.

In addition to her parents, Miriam was preceded in death by her beloved husband William P. Butler, Jr. in March 2014, and her cherished sisters Betty Rugh and Vivian Bolton.

A memorial ceremony will be planned at a later date and Miriam's remains will be placed with her husband's at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville, Ohio.
