Loving Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and Friend

Obituary

Lera T. Steele, (nee Stockum) 96, of Berea and Fresno, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 8, 2020. Lera was born on February 3, 1924 in Coshocton, to Russell and Alice Stockum, and married Richard Steele in 1944. Lera lived with her husband and children in Fresno before relocating to Berea, where they lived for many years before returning to the family farm in Fresno following retirement.

Lera worked for the Berea City School District for 25 years, first as a beloved "lunch lady" at Loomis School, and eventually becoming the manager of the school district lunch program. She was a lifelong, devoted Lutheran church member, belonging to both St. Paul Lutheran Church, Berea, and Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Coshocton, at different times.

Lera enjoyed golf, crocheting, painting ceramics, volunteering with her church, and showering her family with love through her incomparable homecooked meals and baked goods; nobody could bake a pie like Lera could! She remained a lunch lady at heart, making huge meals from scratch for her family that resulted in a lot of delicious leftovers for all to take home. Lera was the host of holiday celebrations in the family, and everyone loved going to grandma's house, which at times was truly located "over the river and through the woods". It was a coming-of-age moment for each grandchild when they would get to lovingly tease grandma about passing her in height, as she was a petite lady of less than five feet. Lera may have been small, but her love for her family, friends, and neighbors was enormous, and she will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all.

Lera is survived by her children, David Steele (Carolyn) and Becky Steele (Joe); her sister, Mima Warren; her grandchildren, Mike Steele, Rachelle Hadlock, Jennifer Rolland (Austin), Brian Carruthers, Melissa Steele-Steeber (Jeff), Meghan Carruthers (Jason); great-grandchildren, Danny, Tara, Chase, Madison, Grace, Jackie, Ben, and Adrianna; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard (2001); her sons, Thomas and Jeffrey; and her siblings, Solomon, Sheldon, and Enos Stockum and Nondis Yoder.
Lera will be interred at Sunset Memorial Park, North Olmsted, during a private graveside service.
