Laura Hensley (nee Hayas), age 66, and a resident of Sheffield Lake, passed away March 26, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Laura was born on May 8, 1950 in Columbia Station, Ohio and moved to Sheffield Lake in 1964, where she resided the remainder of her life.
She was a 1968 graduate of Brookside High School, received her LPN diploma from the former St. Joseph Hospital in 1983, and an associate's degree in nursing from Lorain County Community College in 1991.
Laura was kind, compassionate and selfless, always putting others before herself. She was a generous and loving friend to all who knew her. She took considerable joy in traveling the United States with her husband and friends. She was a devoted mother to her children.
Laura also truly loved all animals and rescued innumerable homeless cats and dogs. She adored her horses, Jed and Babe, as well as her beloved dogs, Maggie, Emma, and grand-dog Lily.
Laura spent her entire career serving others with grace and empathy - she had a passion for helping people. She retired in 2013 from Lorain Correctional Facility after 17 years of service as an RN. She was previously employed as a nurse at Our Lady of the Wayside; the former St. John Hospital in Cleveland; St. John West Shore Hospital; Fairview Hospital; and Ford Motor Company in Cleveland.
Survivors include her beloved husband of 47 years, Marvin "Dennis"
Hensley; son David Hensley of Sandusky, OH; daughter Kathryn Hensley of Brooklyn, NY; mother Norma Hayas of Orange City, FL; 5 siblings, Kenneth Hayas, S. Randolph Hayas, Pamela McDowell, Randy Hayas, and Tamara Hernon; and her nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Hayas, in 1986 and her mother, Helen Hayas (nee Darabant), in 1963.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in her name to the Friendship Animal Protective League, 8303 Murray Ridge Road, Elyria, OH 44035-4746.
Friends may call Tuesday, March 28 from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm. at the Busch Funeral Home, 163 Avon Belden Road, Avon Lake. Services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 8:00pm. Pastor Charles Brown of Sheffield Lake United Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be Wednesday, meet at the funeral home at 9:30am to process to the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery for the 11:15am committal service. www.buschcares.com 440-933-3202
