Obituary for Kathleen Szczepaniak

April 4, 1948 - August 14, 2020
Avon Lake, Ohio | Age 72

Loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, Friend

Kathleen Szczepaniak (nee Koeth) of Avon Lake passed away Friday, August 14, 2020 at the age of 72. Beloved wife for 48 years of Denny Szczepaniak; loving mother of Lindsey Geiss (Paul DDS); proud and devoted grandmother of Ella (age 7) and Weston (age 5). Cherished daughter of Regina (nee Pienkowski) and the late Robert J. Koeth. Dearest sister of Karen Kopaniky (Dennis MD, deceased), Robert (Barbara) and Marie Stelson (Thomas); sister-in-law of Denny's twin brother, Don. She was a dear aunt of eight, great-aunt of eight, precious cousin and friend of many.

Kathy showed the same gentle kindness, love, patience and guidance to each one of the hundreds of children she taught over her 40-year teaching career that she did to her own daughter. Kathy spent the first four years teaching first or second grade in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District, then accepted a position in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District where she taught mostly second grade for 30 years. After her retirement, Kathy continued to substitute there for another six years.

Kathy was active in a book club, Delta Kappa Gamma honor society of key women educators, and the Ohio Retired Teachers' Association. However, her treasured grandchildren brought her the most joy and fulfillment. For the past seven years, Kathy courageously fought cancer with dignity and grace, keeping impeccable notes as a diligent patient. Knowing each day was another opportunity to make a memory and share her love, sweet Kathy gracefully entered her final days in peace.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to all of Kathy's caregivers, especially Dr. Rini, Dr. Ornstein and their caring nurses, Kim and Diane, of The Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute; her loving cardiologist Dr. Hsich, as well as nurses Marianne and Rick of Hospice of the Western Reserve, for their loving care and support. Additional appreciation to Kathy's many educational colleagues and friends who offered her comforting messages over the years.

For those wishing to make a donation in Kathy's memory; Milestones Autism Resources at, Northeast Ohio Food Allergy Network (NEOFAN) at or at the Hospice of the Western Reserve PO Box 72101, Cleveland OH 44192.
