Obituary for Judith Spencer

November 3, 1938 - October 15, 2019
Avon Lake, Ohio | Age 80

Loving Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Sister, Companion, Friend

Judith Anne Arnold Spencer of Avon Lake released her soul on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at the Ames Family Hospice Center in Westlake after a brief illness.
A lover of art, music, travel, and family, Judith showed her children and grandchildren how to be curious, kind, live in the moment, and embrace the world.

Born the youngest of three sisters on November 3, 1938, Judith was raised in Leonia, New Jersey. With her former husband, Donald Lee Spencer, she made Oberlin, Ohio her home after attending Baldwin-Wallace University in Berea, Ohio where she received an undergraduate degree in elementary education. Judith also earned a master's degree in counseling from Bowling Green University in Bowling Green, Ohio. She was an elementary school teacher for several years in Oberlin and a guidance counselor at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio for many years prior to her retirement.

A giving friend, generous stranger, and compassionate listener, Judith made connections with people wherever she went and had a close circle of special loving friendships that spanned 40 years. Her friendships were reflective of her many interests, including art, travel, film, books, people, and the performing arts. In her later years, Judith served as a docent for the Cleveland Museum of Art and travelled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean, and, most recently, to the Galapagos Islands.

Judith was a beloved sister of Marjorie Arnold Lanning and Caroline Arnold, devoted mother to Melanie Spencer (husband Shawn Ramsay), Shelley Spencer (husband Massoud Ahmadi), and David Spencer (deceased), and an inspiring grandmother to five grandchildren (Olivia Ahmadi, Tala Ahmadi, Dustin Ramsay, Ruby Ramsay, Morgan Ramsay), and one great grandchild (Zayna Ahmadi Najih). She was also a caring, long-time companion to Joe Vargus Jr. of Avon Lake.

Judith's lovely smile, gracious manner, and optimistic spirit remained with her through her final days of life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts of tribute be given to Avon Lake United Church of Christ 32801 Electric Blvd., Avon Lake, OH 44012 or the Ames Family Hospice House of the Western Reserve 300 E. 185th Street Cleveland, OH 44119.
