John W. Bonar, 86, of Sheffield Lake, passed away Saturday April 15, 2017 peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 25, 1930 in Ohio County, WV and moved to Sheffield Lake 57 years ago. Mr. Bonar served in the Merchant Marines and then in the Air Force where he helped to build airstrips in Libya. He was employed as a supervisor at General Motors in Brook Park for 32 years before retiring.
John was a Past Master and member of Mid-Century Lodge No. 725; a 32nd Degree Mason, Valley of Cleveland; a Shriner; a Royal Arch Mason; a member of Lorain County Blue Lodge; a Past Patron of the Order of the Easter Star, Day Chapter; and a member of the Order of the Amaranth in West Virginia. He was also a member of the Avon Lake United Church of Christ. John was instrumental in starting the Sheffield/Sheffield Lake Youth Football program. He was a member and supporter of the Brookside Athletic Boosters and was a spectator at many of the school's athletic events. John also loved fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Bonar is survived by his loving wife Shirley M. (nee Anderson), sons Dale A. of West Virginia and John R. (Janet) of Elyria Twp; five granddaughters and a grandson; and six great granddaughters and a great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents John W. and Helen (nee Stewart) and 3 siblings.
Friends may call at the Busch Funeral Home, 163 Avon Belden Rd. Avon Lake from4-7pm Wednesday where masonic services will be held at 7:00pm. Services will be at the funeral home Thursday April 20 at 10:30am, with Rev. Paul Peters officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.
