Obituary for Mr. John Andrew Warhola

May 24, 1952 - September 6, 2019
Avon Lake, Ohio | Age 67

Dear Brother, Teacher and Friend

John Andrew Warhola was born at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lorain Ohio on May 24, 1952.
He died recently at his home in Avon Lake following a series of health problems. He grew up in Lorain until 1959, then resided in Amherst where he graduated from Marion L. Steele High School in 1970. He went on to his beloved Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology in 1974, and later attained a Master of Arts in Education Degree in 1987. John taught science in the Amherst School System for nearly 25 years, after which he went on to early medical retirement. John lived in Avon Lake from 1997 until his death, and was very fond of his adopted community. While teaching in the Amherst School system, he also coached wrestling for a number of years, and took great joy in the athletic and personal development of the members of his teams. John was a deeply spiritual man with a firm faith in the goodness, mercy, and love of God, and this was consistently reflected in his truly exceptional kindness, generosity, and thoughtfulness.

John was an intensely private person with a passion for learning and discovery; he was an avid reader and interested in all aspects of learning, and gained language capability in French and German. John's particular passion was for the natural world and for scientific discovery; he served as a Naturalist for the Lorain County Park System for a number of years in the 1980s-1990s, and was especially interested in, and deeply learned about, botany and bird watching. John was a lover of classical music and took particular satisfaction and joy in learning about the lives and times of his favored composers. He also much enjoyed watching movies and was remarkably knowledgeable about older, classical movies and the actors in them. John also had a special passion for cars, and took great joy in the array of European and other sports-oriented cars that he owned over the years. He had a delightful sense of humor that brightened the lives of all who came into contact with him; he frequently enjoyed relating humorous episodes that he experienced during his many years of teaching middle school children. John was also very fond of his various pet cats over the years, most recently his cat named Harold, all of which provided a deep source of comfort, joy, and affirmation of the goodness of life to John.

John was predeceased by his parents Walter and Norma Leatrice (nee Morgan) Warhola of Amherst Ohio. He is survived by a sister, Susan K. Irwin (Jesse) of Canton Georgia; a brother James W. Warhola (Karen) of Bangor Maine; and a brother Charles B. Warhola of Amherst Ohio. He is also survived by nephews Seth E. Irwin of Brooklyn New York, Viktor J. Warhola of Bangor Maine, a niece Kristen M. Owen (Justin) of Cartersville Georgia, and nephews Matthew S. Irwin (Elizabeth) of Seattle Washington, and Colin G. Warhola of Brewer Maine. John was beloved by all and will be deeply missed.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Busch Funeral Home in Avon Lake on Friday, 27 September from 4 - 5 p.m, preceded by Visitation from 3 - 4 pm.
