Obituary for Mrs. Joanne A. Mueller

November 5, 1926 - May 4, 2020
North Royalton, Ohio | Age 93

Loving Mother, Dear Grandmother, and Cherished Friend of Many

Joanne A. Mueller (nee Daniels), age 93, of North Royalton, Ohio, peacefully passed away on Monday, May 4, 2020 at Athenian Assisted Living in North Royalton.

Joanne was born on November 5, 1926 in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of Hazel E. (nee Arnold) and Carlos F. Daniels. As a young girl of 8 years, Joanne performed radio dramas every Saturday at WTAM radio station in Akron. She soon gained confidence is speaking publicly and performing before an audience, especially at the Methodist Church her family attended at the time. Joanne spent her teenage years as a student at Akron East High School where she greatly enjoyed participating in the drama club, taking-on the lead role in the school play, and leading school assemblies. Joanne also excelled as a marching band majorette and earned the drum major title during her senior year.

Joanne double-majored in speech and speech therapy at the University of Akron. During her time at the University of Akron she met her husband Franklin Wood. After Joanne graduated from the University of Akron, she was hired as the first full-time speech therapist in Summit County, having worked in the Peninsula, Bath, Richfield and Manchester public schools. Joanne and Frank lived in Akron while Joanne worked on earning her Master's degree from Case Western Reserve University. They eventually moved to Cleveland following Frank's job transfer with GMAC.

Following their move to Cleveland, her sons were born just one year and one day apart while they lived in Parma. After her sons began grade school, Joanne went back to work as a speech therapist for the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Public Schools, a position she held for 23 years.

A lifelong Methodist, Joanne was formerly active at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Parma, and was a longtime, faithful member of North Royalton United Methodist Church where she sang in the Choir and was the Church Librarian. In addition to being quite active in her Churches, Joanne was active in the College Club of Akron, the American Association of College Women in Cleveland, and Delta Kappa Gamma, a service group for professional women educators.

A self-taught seamstress at an early childhood age, Joanne could expertly sew and often made her own clothing, even well into her retirement years. Joanne loved square dancing and even created square dancing outfits to share with her circle of square-dancing friends. She attributed her good health, abundant energy, and longevity to staying continually active by dancing many times a week for decades. During her married life, Joanne enjoyed many years of dancing, traveling both nationally and internationally, annual cruise vacations, and most of all, spending time with her children, grandchildren and her many extended family members all over the country. Joanne will be remembered for her eagerness in helping others and for her thoughtful, caring and giving personality.

Surviving family members include sons Jeffrey F. Wood and Mark D. Wood (Yoshiko), and granddaughter Lisa N. Slatzer (Matt). Joanne was preceded in death by husbands Franklin M. Wood, Martin R. Flowers, and Karl F. Mueller.

On Thursday, May 7, 2020, a warm, sunny and breezy spring day, Joanne was accompanied by her loving family to her final resting place at Rose Hill Burial Park in Fairlawn, Ohio, and is interred next to her first husband Franklin M. Wood.
