Obituary

Jane Harriett Smith Lavoie, 91, of Bay Village, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2020, at Hospice of the Western Reserve in Westlake after a long illness.
Jane was born on Nov. 20, 1928, the daughter of James P. "Pete" and Harriett Anderson Smith of Rocky River.
Jane graduated from Rocky River High School and attended Western Reserve College in Cleveland.
She was the beloved wife, and best friend, of Francis Lavoie, who survives. They were married on Nov. 4, 1971, in Rocky River and would have celebrated their 49th anniversary this year.
Jane was employed for many years at Penton Publishing, working her way up to associate editor with the trade publication, Machine Design.
She was known for her "Backtalk" feature, which covered a variety of topics, including the coming age of cubicles in offices — a prediction met with skepticism at the time.
Jane was witty, clever and an accomplished writer, earning the respect of her colleagues, readers and friends.
Jane was a caring, supportive, loving and compassionate person, who championed all causes that helped those in need. She loved all of her family, especially her grandchildren, who brought her great joy.
Jane's special passion was for animals, especially elephants, which she admired for their courage, loyalty and compassion.
She also loved dogs and was the mother of two rescues whom she adored — Beauregard and Joey.
In addition to her husband, Jane is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Brian Francis and Carol Lavoie; a daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Renee Celeste Lavoie Carey; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Noelle Lavoie; two nephews, William Smith and Richard Smith; several grand-nieces and nephews; and several great-grandnieces and nephews.
In addition to her mother and father, Jane was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Robert Smith; and a niece, Janet Dunham.
