James R. Best, 90, a lifelong resident of Avon Lake, passed away, Thursday, August 24, 2017, following a lengthy illness. He was born January 22, 1927 in Cleveland.

Jim was a WWII Army Veteran serving in the Army of Occupation in Germany following the end of the war. Upon return from the service he worked at Westinghouse, Cleveland and the Illuminating Company, Avon Lake before joining the U.S. Postal Service, initially as a letter carrier before becoming a postal clerk for most of his tenure at the Avon Lake Post Office. He worked for the Post office for over 35 years retiring in 1989. For many years, Jim worked six days per week, Saturdays for his brother-in-law Allan Klingshirn, at Klingshirn Winery.

Jim was a member of Holy Spirit Church, Avon Lake where he sang in the choir, he also belong to American Legion Post 211, Avon Lake. His love of music ranged across many genres and he encouraged the musical endeavors of his sons through their school years and beyond. His free time was devoted to his family; he was a little league coach and committeeman with Boy Scout Troop 355. He and his wife Marjorie were proud to witness all three of his sons earn the distinguished rank of Eagle Scout. Jim also helped care for many older members of the family and community though the years. Forsaking hobbies for themselves, he and Marjorie devoted themselves to supporting their sons' activities and career goals. Only after being widowed and retired, did he take up such pastimes as collecting toy lead soldiers and tea cups, attending brass band conventions and maintaining an intense interest in sports, particularly the Cleveland Browns and Indians; he was an avid fan of the Avon Lake High School Shoreman football team and marching band.

Jim is survived by 3 sons, Dan Best (Nancy) of Chardon, Carl Best (Angela) of Cape Elizabeth Maine and Tom Best (Denise) of Independence, Missouri. Other survivors include five grandchildren: Emma, Kate, Ellen, Madeline and Michael; sister Janet Nelson of Standish, Maine and his dear companion Carol Dybo. He is preceded in death by his wife Marjorie Ann (nee Klingshirn), parents Wilbur Lauman and Irene Catherine (nee Rogers) Best and an infant son, James.
