Obituary

James Harry Schindler, 78, of Avon Lake passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2016. Affectionately known as Harry, he was born in Cleveland and grew up in Parma, where he played multiple sports and was a member of the speech and debate team before graduation from Parma Sr. High in 1956. He attended Bowling Green State University and was very active in theater, taking lead roles in many productions. During his time at BGSU, he joined the Phi Delta fraternity, and met his wife of 54 years, Carole.

Harry and Carole married in 1962 and settled in Avon Lake. Harry taught high school English in Avon and worked at the Social Security Administration of Lorain County, from which he retired before entering into a new adventure when he and Carole purchased Close Quarters Pub in 1988. Harry was a mainstay in the community, anchoring the night shift at Close Quarters for the next 27 years. During his shifts, he fell comfortably into the roles of friend, therapist, brother, referee, and father figure for the many regular patrons. He was adored despite the "grumpy old man" exterior he often exuded.

Family was most important to Harry and he was actively involved with his children's lives, coaching soccer, CYO basketball, leading cub scouts, and attending hundreds of sports games, performances, and school events. His love for his family was deep and strong. Watching his children and grandchildren grow up brought him great joy. He leaves a legacy of integrity and family values that touched many.

Harry is survived by his wife, Carole; children JJ, Dan (Bobbi), Dave (Beth), and Jeff (Lani); Harry is survived by his wife, Carole; children JJ, Dan (Bobbi), Dave (Beth), and Jeff (Lani); and grandchildren Jessica, Ryan, Anna, Jack, Danielle, Noah, and Kaileia.
