Obituary

Jack Duane Laraway, 82 of Naples, FL, formerly of Westlake, passed away, Sunday, December 3, 2017. Jack was born September 20, 1935 in Erie, PA.

A graduate of Erie Academy High School and Purdue University with a degree in education, it was his time at Purdue that would set the platform for the rest of his life.

Jack was a member of the "Original Buffalo Bills", in 1960, when the franchise started. After the Buffalo Bills, he went on to play two seasons with the Houston Oilers, 1961 and '62. Winning the AFL championship in 1961. He joined the startup New York Jets in 1963 where he scored the first points in franchise history by sacking the legendary quarterback, Jack Kemp for a two point safety.

After his professional football career, Jack entered the teaching profession and retired with over 25 years of service, coaching and teaching at Avon High School, Westlake High School, Rocky River High School and with most of his time spent in the inner city of Cleveland at John Marshall High School. His love for the game of football never ended as he taught the game of life, through football and challenged young men to achieve their full potential both on and off the field.

In 1998 Jack helped form the Cleveland Chapter of the NFL Players Association, holding roles as secretary, vice-president and president in 2002 and 2003. His contributions continue through charity work whenever he was called upon.

In his free time Jack enjoyed golf, travel, fine dining and playing pinnacle with friends.

Jack is survived by children Jack Laraway (Ginette), Ron Laraway (Cindy), Michael Laraway (Katherine), Michelle McEwen, Tammy Elliott and Tracy Richard (Brad). Other survivors include grandchildren Steve Barrett, Jack Laraway, Jennifer Tomechko (Albert), Julie Laraway, Kelly Roldan (Daniel), Jeffrey Laraway, Stephanie Laraway, Kristina Laraway, Maggie Richard, Hope Richard and Nicole Richard and great grandchildren Noah Roldan, Michael and McKayla Jaeger-Barrett. He is preceded in death by grandson Jason Barrett and Parents Orville and Mildred (nee Crocker) Laraway.

Friends may call at the Busch Funeral Home, 32000 Detroit Rd., from 3:00pm-8:00pm Friday, December 8. The funeral service will be at the funeral home at 8:00pm, Certified Busch Celebrant, Barbara Habecker, will officiate. A Masonic Service will follow. The graveside service will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery, 4523 Love Rd., Erie, PA 16506 at 11:30am Saturday.
