J. Rich Novotny "Smiley", 77, lifelong resident of Avon Lake, passed away, surrounded by family, on Wednesday, April 6, 2017, at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus, following a brief battle with brain cancer. Rich was born on July 27, 1939 in Lorain, and was a 1958 graduate of St. Mary's Academy in Lorain. He was a mail carrier with the Avon Lake Post Office, retiring in 1992 after 29 years. Rich also worked part-time with Novotny Movers and built five homes. Rich was a member of St. Joseph Church (a Eucharistic Minister), and Knights of Columbus Fr. Ragan Council 3269 Avon. He enjoyed retirement; spending time with grandchildren, family, luncheon groups, traveling and taking cruises. An avid gardener, he shared his harvest and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Rich is survived by his high school sweetheart, best friend, and wife of 56 years, Mary C. (nee Bounes); five children, James of Jefferson, OH, Angela Thomas (James) of Athens, OH, John (Laura) of North Royalton, OH, Brian (Debra) of Avon Lake, OH, and Scott (Kelly) of South Riding, VA; 13 grandchildren, Brandon, Alexis, Connor, Lauren, Patrick, Joseph, Daniel, Benjamin, William, Andrew, Meghan, Colleen, and Gwendolyn; siblings Joseph (Mary Anna) of Milwaukee, Anna Mae Nagel, Mary Lou Urig, Claudia Godlewski (Stanley); sister-in-laws Carol, Pat, and Jeanne; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Agatha (nee Stauder); and siblings Eileen Welsh, Maebelle Nagel, Wilbur, Adelbert, Raymond, and Ronald.
