Obituary for Ivan A. Shepard

September 28, 1925 - November 3, 2020
Bay Village, Ohio | Age 95

Loving Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and Friend

Ivan A. Shepard, 95, of Bay Village, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. Ivan was born on September 28, 1925 to Albert and Mary (nee Harrigan) Shepard in Springfield, MA.

Ivan graduated from high school in Agawam, MA where he played varsity football, performed the lead role in the operetta Pirates of Penzance, and was voted to have the "Cutest Smile." After graduating high school at the age of 18, he enlisted in the US Navy during WWII and was assigned to work on a ship that was part of the invasion of Okinawa. Subsequently, he served in the Naval ROTC and graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. While in college, Ivan met the love of his life, Miriam "Mim" Murray. They were married for 60 years until her passing in 2010.

Ivan worked as a Vice President for various companies as an Investment and Insurance Executive. Even though Ivan was a successful executive, his priority was always his wife and children. He turned down opportunities to work at other companies so that he didn't have to uproot his family.

Ivan was an avid movie buff and knew trivia about all things related to movies. Ivan, Mim, and their young family would spend many Friday nights at the drive-in movies. He would continuously watch various news broadcasts, documentaries, and sporting events. The family could always rely on Ivan for updated news reports. He loved details, data, and science. He would frequently send the family articles about new scientific data and interesting information. He would leave pieces of paper around the house where he calculated the number of human heartbeats within a year, the age of the earth, or the number of miles he could travel in light years. Above all that he loved, he cherished spending time with his family the most.

One of Ivan's greatest characteristics was forgiveness. Everything he did came from a foundation of love and caring for others around him. He embodied the phrase from the Lord's prayer, "Forgive us our debts trespasses as we also have forgiven our debtors".

Ivan's popularity with adults was only eclipsed by his popularity with young people and children. Children loved being with him because of his great sense of humor. He had a child-like quality that attracted children and a charm that made strangers immediately like him.

Left behind to cherish Ivan's memory are his children Kirk (Nadine) Shepard, Robin (Doug) Hawkins and Mark (Pam) Shepard; grandchildren Ryan (Christina), Tara (C.J.), Kirk (Oralia), Devin, Taylor (Cortney), Paige (Amir), Jordan (fiancée Kim), Mackenzie (fiancé Kasey), Matt (fiancée Carly), Austin and Pierce; great-grandchildren of Macey, Callie, Crosby, Parker, Jude, Deacon, Hunter, Baker, Nellie, Ava and Joshua.

Preceded in death by his wife, Miriam "Mim" Shepard; his parents; and his step-mother Gertrude Shepard.
