Irene H. Braden (nee Rehoreg), 101, of Elyria passed away Sunday, December 9, 2018 at Mercy New Life Hospice Center in Lorain following a brief illness. She was born February 18, 1917 in Flint, Michigan and at two weeks old, her family moved to Lorain and she remained in the area the rest of her life.
During World War II, Irene worked at General Industries in Elyria and later in the Elyria School System in the cafeteria. When she retired, she volunteered at Elyria Memorial Hospital and was very proud of her 25 years of service. She attended Pilgrim United Church of Christ and previously at Washington Avenue Christian Church in Elyria. She was a member of Stone City Eastern Star, Starlett, RSVP, Red Hat Society and was a charter member of the Elyria Senior Women's Fellowship.
She enjoyed gardening, walking, ice skating, roller skating, and bike riding. She was an enthusiastic and avid sports fan, and loved the Cleveland Indians, the Cleveland Browns, and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Irene was third of eight children of John and Elizabeth (nee Biro) Rehoreg, from Hungary, who were part of the great wave of Eastern European immigrants who came to America in search of a better life. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Rehoreg (1931) and Elizabeth Rehoreg (1932), her husband Ernest (Ernie, 1984), sister Olga Pasadyn, brother John Rehoreg, and sisters Elizabeth (Betty) Blaner, Margaret (Margie) Newcomer, Priscilla (Pat) Walden, Rose Thomas, Mary (Goldie) French, nephews Tom French, and Joe Blaner. She was also preceded by sisters-in-law, Verna Eldred, Irma Vreeland, and Irene Lumadue.
She is survived by her sons, Jim (Rosemary, nee Hasko) Braden of Columbus, OH, and Tom (Phyllis) Braden of Wellington and their children Jamie Romph of North Ridgeville and Melissa Romph of Elyria. In addition, she is survived by grandchildren Stephanie (Brian) Ramser and their daughter Krista, who live in Avon, OH; Kevin Braden and his daughters Zoe and Molly, of Athens, AL; and Lesley (Paul) Bennett and their children Aiden, Cole, and Ava, of Troy, MI. She leaves behind her beloved cat, Gypsy.
In addition, Irene is also survived by many nieces and nephews who enjoyed her zest for life and sense of humor. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00AM Saturday, December 15 at Busch Funeral Home, 114 Second Street, Elyria. There will be an Eastern Star Service at 10:45AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00AM. The Reverend Patricia Jefferis will officiate. Burial will follow at Brookdale Cemetery with lunch and reception following at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Abbewood Assisted Living in Elyria, and the nurses and aides from Mercy New Life Hospice in Lorain for the care they provided for Irene.
