Obituary

Helen Rickey (b. 1929) is now reunited with her beloved husband, Stan Rickey ("Red"), who welcomed her into heaven on November 3, 2017.

Helen was born in Detroit, Michigan to Elsie and Norman Stricker. She graduated from East Detroit High School and Capital University before obtaining her nursing degree at Henry Ford Hospital. On vacation with friends in 1952, she met Red -- thus beginning an epic love story that would span 5 decades. Helen and Red married in 1956 and welcomed four children.

Mrs. R / Momcat was a loving and devoted spouse and mother, putting in double shifts at home with the four kids while Stan worked his shifts at the Ford Motor Company.
Though she longed for the day when her kids would want to eat the hot lunch served at school, her kids preferred her brown bag lunches (of which she prepared nearly 8000).

She'd tell you what was on her mind, offer wise counsel, but lived by the motto "you never have to take back what you don't say. "

She was proud of her nursing work and stayed connected to helping others as a 30-year volunteer at Saint Joseph and St. John Westshore Hospitals. Still, in spite of her Nurse's training, she believed that blackberry brandy could cure just about anything.

After her children were on their own, Helen took pleasure in her role as the Matriarch of the family. On every Saturday morning, there was always coffee and doughnuts waiting for whoever stopped by on their morning errands.

Following the death of her beloved Red in 1997, Helen traveled to many parts of the country with friends and family. In 2014, she began a new chapter in her life when she moved to Avon Lake Town Center where she found new friends who she enjoyed immensely.

Helen will be greatly missed by her four children, David (Audrey) of Avon Lake, Susan Hatfield (Tim) of Winona, MN, Carole Holowecky (Tim) of Avon, and Paul, of Grafton; 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Helen was proceeded in death by her brothers Ira John Stricker and Earl Stricker.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 6, from 5 -8 pm and Busch Funeral Home 163 Avon-Belden Road Avon Lake, Ohio. A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, November 7th at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 32747 Lake Road, Avon Lake, Ohio, Rev. Jeff Steeber of the church will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, Helen would have appreciated donations to the Alzheimer's Association (att'n Audrey's Army), 23215 Commerce Park #300, Beachwood, OH 44122
