Obituary

Harold Gordon Schlegel, 88 of Avon Lake; passed away peacefully at home on May 4, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was born in Garfield Heights, OH on Nov. 13, 1931. Hal was a graduate of Garfield Heights High School. He joined the Air Force and served in the Korean War, stationed in Japan. After separating from the Air Force, he obtained his private pilots license. He started his career as an air traffic controller at the Pittsburgh Center. With the opening of the Cleveland Air Route Traffic Control Center in Oberlin, OH, Hal transferred and spent the rest of his career as a controller, supervisor, and training instructor at Oberlin. Hal met the love of his life, Marilyn, in Pittsburgh and was a devoted husband and father for over 60 years. Hal was an active man and enjoyed the outdoors. He loved skiing, boating, golfing, camping and most of all traveling with his family. Hal is survived by his wife Marilyn; daughters Patricia Petro (Dave), Pamela Breitweg (Rob), Susan Draper (Bob), and son James (Mary); grandchildren Erin, Matthew (Holly), and Jessica Gale; Chris (Mary Johanna), Sean, and Adam Breitweg; and Rachael Young (Jeff), Paul and Katie Draper; Laurel and Paige Schlegel; great-grandchild Alex Young, and 2 more on the way. Hal is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Gladys and his brothers Donald and Richard. All services private.
