Obituary

Gloria H. Erickson joined loved ones who passed before her after battling a prolonged illness on Thursday night, July 11, 2019 while being cared for at Avon Oaks. She was born on December 15, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois and her parents Gilbert and Gladys Hoffman relocated to the Elyria area when she was a child.
Gloria was a 1955 graduate of Elyria High School and attended Oberlin College. Throughout her life, she worked in several professions. Gloria was a Stewardess for Capital Airlines, a Trainer with Vic Tanny's Gym, a Waitress, a Phlebotomist at Elyria Memorial Hospital, a Floral Designer for Botamer Florist, and a Sales Representative for Tony's Pizza, just to name a few. She also had her own cable television show in the early years of cable television. Gloria hosted her own local talk show on channel 35 called Thirty-Five Live. Artistic endeavors were what she enjoyed most. Being naturally gifted with musical ability, a vivid imagination, and possessing an energetic creative spirit allowed her to enjoy years of employment with the Balloon Tycoon performing original singing telegrams as various characters. A partial list includes being a clown, penguin, chicken, gorilla, father time, and her most popular character Miss Piggy's cousin Piggly Wiggly Parton. She also entertained as a belly dancer.
Gloria was part of The Elyria Musical Arts Society producing and performing in several annual Ice Cream Socials over the years while acting as the group's President. She was also President of The Parent Teachers Association and a Den Mother with the Cub Scouts when her sons were in elementary school. For a number of years she was an active member of The Lorain County Historical Society, belonged to The First United Methodist Church of Elyria where she sang in the choir and took part in several church activities. Over the years she also played a part in the local productions of musicals such as Oklahoma at The Palace Theater in Lorain and Man of La Mancha at Lorain County Community College's Stocker Center. One of her favorite creative endeavors occurred every Halloween. She would paint a different character or movie themed image on the front picture window of her house and pass out candy to trick or treaters dressed to compliment the image or theme she had painted. This Halloween tradition made the front page of The Chronicle Telegram a few times over the years. Every year kids in the neighborhood and surrounding area would wonder what she was going to do this year. Those closest to Gloria knew there was rarely a dull moment when she was involved. Nobody was more aware of this than her late husband of 57 years William S. Erickson.
Gloria always took the time to care for people and animals in need, adopting several stray dogs over her lifetime. Giving to multiple charities and donating her time trying to make things better was always a part of her life. She enjoyed being with family and friends, spending time gardening, and working with her computer. Moments with her grandchildren, Ellie and Evan, were always something she looked forward to. Along with her grandchildren she leaves behind two sons, Eric and Corbie and daughter-in-law, Teresa Corder Erickson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Gladys Hoffman and her husband, William S. Erickson. She will be greatly missed until we join her in the house of the Lord.
Visitation will be 2-4pm and 6-8pm Thursday, July 18 at the Busch Funeral Home, 114 Second Street, Elyria. The funeral service will be 11am Friday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Elyria Animal Protective League, 8303 Murray Ridge Road, Elyria, OH 44035. www.buschcares.com
