February 12, 1920 - February 4, 2017
Elyria, Ohio | Age 96
Evelyn (Evey) Becker, age 96, passed away on February 4, 2017. She was the beloved wife of Harry (Hecky) Becker who predeceased her in 2013. Evey loved her family very much and had special joy spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Evey was born in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of Isaac and Anna Cowan. Her siblings were Henry Cowan and Bess Ortlip.
Evey enlisted in the Women's Air Corp during World War II. In 1945, she and Hecky were married while both serving in the Philippine Islands. They had a traditional Jewish wedding in a very non-traditional setting. They raised three children in Elyria and enjoyed family time, travel, and shorter outings and walks as their health declined. They were very happy living at the Wesleyan Village after making a comfortable transition there in 2009.
Evey worked and volunteered in many different settings. Her most loved job was teaching Hebrew to students at Temple B'Nai Abraham in Elyria. She took great pride in helping students prepare to become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Numerous friendships were developed over the years between Evey and her students. Both she and Hecky were active members in the temple. They found much comfort and happiness in attending services and events at the temple where they had many friends. Friends throughout the entire Elyria community enriched Evey's life. The family thanks and appreciates all the care and support she received from outside and inside the Wesleyan Village community and the love and support felt by extended family.
Survivors include children Sharon (Nate) Sklar and Shelly (Ross) Rapaport; grandchildren Debbie (Dan) Wilson, Brian Sklar, Lauren (Dan) Hogan, and Allison Rapaport; great grandchildren Dayna, Kiley, and Sean Wilson and Ava and Alyssa Hogan, and several nieces and nephews.
There will be a service for Evey at 11am Tuesday, February 7 at Busch Funeral Home, 114 Second Street, Elyria. Rabbi Lauren Werber will officiate. Interment will be at the Elyria Jewish Cemetery on Route 113 following the service. Family will receive guests at the Wesleyan Village, 807 West Avenue, Elyria on Tuesday evening, February 7 from 7-9pm. There will be a short service at 7pm that evening.
