Obituary

Elisena Guarino, 88 of Avon Lake, OH passed away surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, July 14, 2020. She was born in Civitavecchia, Italy on July 19, 1931 to parents Giuseppe Cau and Giovanna Maria Pero.

Elisena lived her childhood on the Isle of Sardinia in Italy. When she was about 19, she went to live with her sister in Rome, where she met and fell in love with Arcangelo Saracino Guarino. He was serving as chef to the Pope but wished to move to the United States. In the mid 1950's Elisena moved to New York to join Arcangelo who had already come over to establish residency. She remained a homemaker, raising their four children, while he worked in some of the area's finest restaurants. In the early 1960's they opened the Blue Sky Restaurant in Forest Hills, NY which they ran together until he became ill in 1971. They moved the family back to Italy, settling in Villanova, a small town near Tivoli, where she remained for many years before moving to Ohio to be near family in the United States, while making many visits back to Italy.

Elisena was a very hands-on lady who enjoyed making beautiful things with her hands. She was always building or fixing things. She finished the entire basement in the Forest Hills home they lived in on her own. Elisena also enjoyed basket weaving and knitting; she had a green thumb and enjoyed growing her own vegetables. She was very involved in her church in Villanova, where she was a Deacon, led the choir, led many prayer groups, and went on church trips all around Europe and Jerusalem.

She is survived by her loving children Jeni Washburn (Alfred), Mary Guarino (Enzo Luca), Dominick Guarino (Trish) and Elizabeth Guarino (the late Santino Monaldi); adoring grandchildren Michael Washburn (Jenn), Lisa Mentillo (Anthony), Daniele Luca, Alessia Luca (Gabrielle Surcis), Nicholas Guarino (Ashley), Sarah Palmer (Eric), Simone Monaldi (Manuela) and Jessica Monaldi (Francesco Camposano); 9 great-grandchildren with 1 more on the way.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Arcangelo Saracino Guarino; brothers Piero, Dino and Giovanni Cau; sisters Matilda and Lydia Cau; and her parents.
