Donald E. Hill, 78 of Avon Lake, passed away at O'Neil Health Care in Bay Village on Thursday, March 26, 2015. Donald was born in Chassell, MI on May 28, 1936. He spent his younger life in the Copper Country area of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He is a graduate of Ontonagon High School Class of 1953. He joined the U.S. Navy in April of 1954. Upon discharge he was employed by White Pine Copper Company for seven years. He left his employment in August of 1964, where he enrolled at Michigan Technological University graduating with SCM Corporation, working in the Glidden Paints group. Donald was a 25 year member of the American Legion Post 211 Avon Lake and Past Commander for 4 years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood working and camping.
In June of 1959, he was united in marriage to Shirley Rimpela in Chassell, MI. They lived in Chassell for nine years, moving to Avon Lake in 1968, living there for nine years, and then was transferred to Atlanta, GA where he resided for fifteen years before moving back to Cleveland.
He is survived by his wife Shirley, two sons, Jeffrey (Dawn) Hill of Canton, GA and Marc Hill of Avon Lake. Three sisters Lora (Wesley) Huhta, Arlene Vourninen, and Brenda (Ronald) Ervast, all living in the Chassell, MI area. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, five nieces, and four nephews.
Friends may call at the Busch Funeral Home, 163 Avon Belden Road, Avon Lake from 10am- noon on Thursday, April 2 followed by a Memorial service at the funeral home at noon. American Legion Post 211 will conduct a farewell service and Celebrant James Longsworth will officiate.
Committal services will be held at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, OH, on Friday, April 3 at 10am where Military Honors will be observed. (Please arrive at 9:45am)
