Obituary for David L. Palisin

November 15, 1946 - September 28, 2019
Rocky River, Ohio | Age 72

Loving Husband

David Lawrence Palisin, age 72, passed away peacefully from complications due to cancer and kidney disease on Saturday, September 28, 2019, with his loving family by his side. He was born in Lakewood, Ohio on November 15, 1946, son of the late William and Opal (nee Dew). He grew up in Brooklyn, where he attended grade school at St. Thomas More.

He was a 1964 graduate of St. Edward High School. He received his undergraduate degree in finance from The Ohio State University in 1967, where he was a member of Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity. In 1971, he received an MBA in management at Case Western Reserve University and then an MBA in accounting from Miami University in 1973.

He married his neighbor, Marilyn (nee Zenchak) in 1975, and for 44 years, they had a devoted, loving marriage. For the past twenty years, they resided in Rocky River. Together, they traveled all 50 states and in recent years started traveling in Europe, this past May to London and Paris.

He started his professional career in public accounting and secured his CPA certificate. From there, his entrepreneurial spirit took over, and in 1981, he purchased a small distributorship here in Cleveland, Cut Tool and Supply. In 1983, he combined that company with the acquisition of Sup-R-Die, Inc., another tool and die distributor. His education, background in public accounting, and team building skills helped him develop a growing and successful enterprise. In 1995, he and a partner co-founded a new business, Diamond Metals, which served the same industry but backward integrated them into the steel processing side, another successful venture.

Finally starting to think about planning his retirement, he successfully sold the Sup-R-Die business to two key employees in January 2017 and followed that with the sale of Diamond Metals to a private equity firm in January 2018.

Beyond the business side, where he was active in many trade associations, David loved golf and belonged to Westwood Country Club, where he recently was chairman of the Finance Committee. He was a former member at Lakewood Country Club, where he participated on the board and various committees. He also was an active member of St. Edward's Finance Committee, a former member of the Cleveland Athletic Club, where several lifelong friendships developed, and since retiring, volunteered with Business Advisors of Cleveland. For the past ten years, he was on the board of his condominium association.

While David loved many sporting activities, he was most passionate for the Buckeyes and Browns, where he was a season ticket holder for both for many years. That same love extended to his high school alma mater, where he and Marilyn recently made a major gift to the St. Edward's capital campaign. The new commons area is being named in their honor.

David is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Marilyn, his devoted brother Terrence (Jane) of Fort Myers, FL, and his niece, Tracy Thomas of San Diego, along with his brother-in-law, John Zenchak (Kris) of Brookfield, IL and nieces, Jessica Petersen (Eric) and Erika Zenchak. Many cousins also survive.

A special thank you is being extended to all the doctors and nurses at Fairview Hospital who provided such compassionate care and support over the last two weeks. Another thank you to his doctors at the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus for their excellent treatment of his medical challenges the past several years.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in David's name to the St. Edward Endowment Fund, 13500 Detroit Ave., Lakewood, OH 44107.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 am on Saturday, October 5, 2019, at St. Christopher Church, 20141 Detroit Rd., Rocky River, OH 44116. Family will receive friends at a reception to celebrate David's life at Westwood Country Club, following Mass. Interment at Lakewood Park Cemetery is planned at a later date. Rest in peace, dear David. 440-333-9774
