Obituary

David J. Cook, 89, of Rocky River, Lakewood and Vero Beach, Florida, passed away March 13, 2018. Beloved husband of 54 years of Elaine (nee Rebar); cherished father of Craig D. Cook (Jan Karman) and Holly Cook Sullivan (Tim); dearest grandfather of Beatrice, Madelyn, and James Cook and Dan, Erin, Kyle and Hugh Sullivan; brother of the late Daniel G, M.D. (Barbara) and Richard R. Cook (Marian). Born in Cleveland, raised in Lakewood, and graduated Lakewood HS in 1947. Graduate of Case Institute of Technology (B.S. Engineering; member Beta Theta Pi fraternity); Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania (MBA); and Western Reserve School of Law (LLB). He was employed with Johnson Service Company; practiced law for 17 years with Merkel, Campbell, Dill & Zetzer in Cleveland; joined Hy Level Industries as VP and General Counsel for 32 years. Served in the US Coast Guard during the Korean War: Lt. (j.g.), Commander of USCG LORAN Station, Hokkaido, Japan. Rocky River Councilman for 27 years (President, 8 years). The Council Chamber was named for him upon his retirement. He held memberships in the Ohio and Cleveland Bar Associations; The Cleveland Yachting Club (58 years-Dock Chairman 21 years); Rockwell Springs Trout Club and The Beaver Creek Club. He helped establish the first free speech forum in Volgograd, Russia (Cleveland's Sister City) with Alan Davis of the Cleveland City Club. Dave loved competitive sailing, duck hunting with Labradors Buffy and Buster, fishing in Northern Canada, the Cleveland Orchestra, opera, photography, skating and his grandchildren. His family loyalty was genuine as was his regard for law and order. Life with Dave was an amazing adventure nurtured by love every step of the way.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 11 am at Rocky River Presbyterian Church, 21750 Detroit Road, Rocky River, OH 44116. Private Burial. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Cleveland Orchestra, 11001 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44106, Ames Hospice House c/o Hospice of the Western Reserve, 17876 St. Clair Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44110 or the Rocky River Presbyterian Church, 21750 Detroit Road, Rocky River, OH 44116.
