She was raised in Manhattan with her sister Barbara and attended PS 187 and George Washington High School where she was voted Most Popular Senior Girl in 1943. She received a Master's degree in biochemistry from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles in 1948 and spent a few years working as a biochemist at the Squib Institute in NJ and as a Mass Spectroscopist at Rocky Flats Uranium Separation Plant, CO.
Catherine married Roy Victor Harrington on June 14th, 1952 at Riverside Church in NYC and in 1954 she took time off to raise her children but she often worked part time teaching bio-chemistry, genetics and other STEM classes at various colleges in NY and OH.
