Obituary

Bernice J. Ogan, (Galbraith) passed into the loving arms of God on March 6th, 2021 at the age of 91. Bernie was born in Houston, PA, but lived most of her adult life in Lorain, Sheffield Village and finally at Rose Senior Living in Avon, OH.

She received her degree in Education from Slippery Rock College in Pennsylvania and became a teacher for 30+ years for the Lorain School system, primarily spending her career at Whittier Junior High. She taught Math and Physical Education, but she was much more than a teacher. Many students felt her loving care to guide them to be a productive and valued part of the community. She also served as a volleyball coach and Cheerleader coordinator. Bernie loved to compete and strived to bring her teams to a winning conclusion, but never lost sight of how forming the team was more important in guiding young people to be the best that they could be.

Bernie was active in bowling and golf leagues. Golf was often followed by a friendly poker game with friends. She also enjoyed playing bridge. Famously, she rarely lost at cards. Her life in retirement was full keeping busy with friends and family. Puzzles were also integral to her activity. She enjoyed coaxing people to put a few pieces in before leaving her company. She volunteered at Church and enjoyed helping serve food for the poor.

She was married to Robert L. Ogan for 53 years before his passing. Both were active members of Avon Lake United Church of Christ. They raised two boys – Jim (Margaret) from Charlottesville, Virginia and Jay (Mary) from Lorain. Grandchildren Benjamin, Erin (Hal), Sarah (Taylor), & William. Family was central to Bernie's life. Her grandchildren affectionately referred to her as "Buddy". This was most notable because she was their best buddy for their entire life. Many happy moments were shared either with her family in Ohio, Virginia & Pennsylvania. While Christmas and Easter were major family events, she always celebrated St. Patrick's Day with zeal, along with something green for the grandkids. She sent birthday cards every year – always on time and always thoughtful. Of course she was a Cleveland sports fan to the core, but she reserved her loudest cheers for her children and grandkids at their performances, sports, and life milestones.
