Alice M. Klinect, 100, passed away Thursday, October 17, 2019 at Life Care of Elyria. She was born November 19, 1918 in Grafton Township and lived most of her life in Elyria.
She was a 1937 graduate of Elyria High School and a 1940 graduate of the M.B. Johnson School of Nursing. She received a diploma in Operating Nursing from graduate hospital, University of Pennsylvania and attended Kent State University. She was employed at the former Elyria Memorial Hospital for 44 years and at the time of her retirement, she was Assistant Director Special Services, including operating room, recovery room, intensive care unit, cardiac care unit, outpatient services, hemodialysis, central service, and staff development.
During her nursing career, she was an active member of the Ohio Nurses Association, the American Nurses Association, the Cleveland Area League for Nursing, and the greater Cleveland Hospital Association.
She served on the Board of Lorain County District Nurses Association, Membership Committee Cleveland Area League for Nursing, Health Education Television Network Committee Cleveland Center for Health Affairs, Network Council #22 for End Stage Renal Disease, Network ESRD Medical Review Board, Advisory Committee RN/BSN Outreach-Akron University Program, Chairman of the Conference group on Operating Room Nursing of the American Nurses Association 1964-1966, and a member of Council and Medical Review Board of Network #22 for end stage Renal Disease.
She had the following articles published: Round Table on Operating Room Nursing, American Journal of Nursing, August 1965. What is O.R. Nursing? Who Should Do It? Hospital Topics, September 1965.
She received the following honors: recognition by the Cleveland Area League of Nursing for outstanding contribution to In-Service Education especially in leadership development and for counseling and assistance to students of nursing in the M.B. Johnson School of Nursing and the Monsignor Griffin Award, Ohio Hospital Association for outstanding literary contribution to the hospital field, 1966.
She was instrumental in getting the Surgical Technician Program established at Lorain County Community College.
In spite of a busy nursing career, she was able to realize the dream of an eight year old that wanted to see the world when she opened the pages of her first geography book. She managed to see much of the world with many interesting and educational experiences. She visited all the states of the USA including Hawaii and Alaska, the Canadian Provinces, most of Mexico including the Myan Ruins, Guatemala, most of South America, she sailed the Caribbean, visited much of Europe, Croatia, Turkey, Russia, an African Safari, the South Sea Islands, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, China, Philippines, and Bali.
In her spare time, she enjoyed gourmet cooking, landscaping, entertaining, and golf. She was a lifetime member of Community of Faith United Church of Christ (former St. Paul United Church of Christ). She served on the church council and chaired several committees.
Miss Klinect is survived by many cousins and was preceded in death by her parents Irvin and Viola (nee Law) and her brother Eugene (Gene) and her sister-in-law Florence.
