Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Brother, Friend

John R. Balmat, 91 of Avon Lake passed away on June 15th, 2020. He was born to parents Walter C. Balmat and Hazel M. Moulin on August 19th, 1928 in Louisville, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Marian; his parents; brothers Beau, Paul, Bob, Donald, Albert; sisters Virginia and Theresa; and his son-in-law Robert Stephen.

He is survived by his loving children William J. Balmat (Deborah); Sue Stephen (Robert, dec); Timothy J. Balmat (Melanie); and JoAnn Bacnik (Michael); brother Thomas Balmat; and the grandfather of 11 and great-grandfather of 25 children.

He was a loving a husband who enjoyed his family and grand-children above all else.

John was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. He and Marian volunteered for many years at the Cleveland Clinic where they were both honored for their efforts.

John graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1946 with honors. He then attended John Carroll University. He joined the Village of Bratenahl's Police department where he served for over 30 years; earning the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant and finally serving as the Chief of Police for 10 years.

During this time, he continued to further his education through classes at the Northwestern University Traffic Institute; Notre Dame College; Case Western Reserve University and finally attendance at the F.B.I. National Academy where he earned additional credit hours through the University of Virginia.

John's professional affiliations included the F.B.I National Academy Associates; the Ohio Chiefs of Police Association; Cuyahoga County Police Chiefs Associations; the Crime Clinic, Inc. of Cleveland and the Fraternal Order of Police – Bratenahl Lodge. John was also a member of the Holy Name Society and the St. Ignatius Alumni Association.

During his time in law enforcement, John also taught physical education at two parochial schools (Holy Cross and St. Paul's – both in Euclid, OH) from 1961 to 1973.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be forwarded to the Wayne A. Leon – 86' Scholarship Fund thru St. Ignatius High School. This fund is for the sole purpose of assisting deserving students from families of the Greater Cleveland's Public Safety Forces pursue their education. Contributions can be sent to St. Ignatius High School, Wayne A. Leon '86 Scholarship Fund @ 1911 West 30th, Cleveland, Ohio 44113 – in the name of John Balmat, Class of '46.
