Tribute & Message From The Family

Loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother

Hedwig "Hattie" Romano (nee Krol), 92, passed away on October 1, 2019 after a short illness. Beloved mother of Cristine Slimak and Vincent, grandmother of Alicia (Brad) Tipping and Matthew (Stephanie) Slimak, and great grandmother to Keaton and Avery. She was "Aunt Hattie" to many, and a second mother to Albert (Tammy) and Bernie Slimak. She had a special bond with her great niece, Mary (Ben) Wheelock.

She was born December 24, 1926 to Frank and Sophie Krol in Cleveland, Ohio, where she lived her entire life. After losing her mother in childbirth, Hattie was raised by her foster mother, Mary Jurecki. She retired from Bakers Union Local 19 in 1989, having worked for Tip Top and Schwebel's bakeries. In her retirement, she enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking, Scrabble, and organizing the closets and drawers of anyone who let her (and many in protest). She loved celebrating her birthday and Christmas with the extended Romano family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Gus and Emil Krol, Joe and Casey Jurecki, and Mary Plezia, ex-husband, Jim, her daughter, Cristine, and her beloved niece, Joanne Wilson. Her family thanks Dee Dee Romano, the Hospice of the Western Reserve, and the Renaissance Retirement Campus, especially her aide, Kelly, for the outstanding care that they provided in her final months.

Hattie loved her drinks, and we invite everyone to post a toast to her, preferably with Miller High Life, J├Ągermeister, or small cans of pineapple juice, using #HattiesBestLife. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve (hospicewr.org) or Eliza Jennings (elizajennings.org).

A celebration of Hattie's life will be held from 1:00 PM concluding with prayers at 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 19, 2019, at Busch Funeral Home, 7501 Ridge Road, Parma, Ohio 44129. Per Hattie's request, please wear bright colors; no black or other dark colors of mourning.

Condolence & Memory Journal

I knew Hattie in my capacity as a home maker through Seniors Helping Seniors. She became more than a client to me - she became a friend. She shared memories of her childhood and her work career.

I'll miss Hattie beating me in Scrabble every time - then offering me advice on how to improve my game.

Rest in Peace,
Barbara Besuner

Hattie was a wonderful, loving, caring person. She never let anything go to waste. She could make a whole other meal with her few leftovers. She was an awesome cook and shared many ideas with me and others. When you sat down to dinner at her house, there was placemats, linen napkins, great food and the best company. She was also the "Queen of Crafts". Every holiday theme decorated her home. I loved her stories and her strength. She overcame a lot of hardships in her life, always finding the silver lining somewhere. She loved her biological and "extended family" as she put it. Rest in Peace Dear friend. You are truly going to be missed.

Aunt Hattie was one of a kind. She openly shared her memories and experiences, and I am thankful - those conversations were a passageway into our family history for many of us. She was gentle and kind, and could also be feisty and fierce at times. She embraced and appreciated children, and I loved watching her ask them questions. She was interested in what they had to share.

Whenever you see a bird singing a song, think of Hattie and her smile. She would love being in the moment with you!

Oto dla Ciebie, Hattie!
