Tribute & Message From The Family

Loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister, and Friend to Many

Dona M. Dillon (nee Peterson), 93, of Bay Village, beloved wife of Richard C. Dillon; loving mother of Richard (Debra), James (Marisa), Christian, and the late Peter; devoted grandmother of James, Colin, Jenna and Zachary; dear sister of Dorothy Stish, Darrell and the late Dennis and Darcy Peterson. Preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Lillian Peterson.
Dona passed away peacefully on Saturday Aug. 10, 2019, a few days shy of her 70th wedding anniversary. She was a remarkable woman who pursued life with vigor and strength and suffered setbacks with resilience and grace.
Born in Iowa, Dona was the second-oldest of five children. She spent much of her youth living and learning in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In her youth, she excelled in class, played the viola and pursued tennis. After high school, she became a nurse. She would use those nursing skills to support her husband through college in Colorado and during the early days of his career as an engineer in the Cleveland area. She left nursing to raise a family, but never lost interest in it.
A lifelong learner, Dona loved reading newspapers, magazines and books. She often sent newspaper or magazine clippings of interest to her children and their families and kept a stack of books to read on the coffee table.
In her spare time, Dona loved to sew, knit and follow her favorite sports teams. She often listened to or watched a Cleveland Indians or Ohio State University Buckeyes game as she knitted her latest intricate sweater or blanket for a loved one or friend. She also loved music, particularly jazz, and played the piano as an adult. Sometimes her sons would come home from school to hear jazz or show tunes playing on the stereo as she prepared the family dinner or baked platefuls of after-school treats.
Dona was always ready to help or comfort others, be it a friend who just lost a son in Vietnam, the baby next door choking on a Christmas bell, or a son's friend selling magazine subscriptions door to door.
In her later years, Dona battled several forms of cancer that left her weakened but no less resilient. She remained faithful to God, family and friends and showed everyone how to carry on with style and grace.
A public memorial visitation at the BUSCH FUNERAL HOME, 163 Avon-Belden Road, Avon Lake, OH will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 15.

Dona was a very dignified lady. She was always very pleasant to everyone. We were sad to see her leave from our family at Independence Village of Avon Lake.

Though we lived states apart, Aunt Dona always took an interest in my life. I will always remember her smile and hugs whenever we had the opportunity to be together. She had a huge heart. It had to be to hold all those she loved and those who loved her. My heart goes out to the Dillon family. Hugs to you all.

What a beautiful tribute to Dona. The words so perfectly describe this woman with whom the VonVoigt family had the honor of knowing her through Rick, Deb, Jenna and Colin Dillon. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the Dillon family as you travel through this loss.
